Prognosis of cognitive impairment

Project

The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and artificial intelligence (AI) to assess mild cognitive impairment and caregiver overload.

Several studies have verified the relationship between the walking speed of elderly people with the development of mild cognitive impairment. The aim of this project is twofold, first, to evaluate the constructs of loneliness, social isolation, home position and walking speed of the elderly to relate them to mild cognitive decline. Second, to evaluate the constructs of loneliness and social isolation and relate them to caregiver overload.

This study is longitudinal, a sample of elderly people and caregivers will be monitored in their own homes for several months. Conversational devices, wearables and Bluetooth low energy (BLE) will be used to collect information. Subsequently, the mild cognitive decline of the elderly and the overload of caregivers will be modelled according to the aforementioned variables, using statistical models and Artificial Intelligence.

The use of ICT and AI in this area would bring economic, social and health benefits, as it could result in the decrease of:

The number of readmissions of the elderly in hospitals or, in the length of hospital stays.

  1. The pharmaceutical expenditure derived.
  2. The probability of visiting the health centre.
  3. The probability of visiting the emergency department.
  4. Referrals to social services.
  5. The probability of admission to nursing homes.

The project has the transversal objective of taking into account the gender perspective, and the variables of age, socio-educational level and economic level in the prevalence of loneliness and social isolation of the elderly, as well as of formal and informal caregivers.

The project Evaluation for the prognosis of mild cognitive impairment in the elderly and caregiver overload through information and communication technologies and artificial intelligence is funded by the Universitat Jaume I (UJI).
